Swim Team Season
Swim team season starts the first day of June and runs through the last weekend in July. Swim team practice takes place every night starting at 7:00 p.m. There are two sessions each night. The first session is for the younger swimmers (10 and under) and the second is for the older swimmers (11 and older). The coaches start the session with 15 minutes of dry land conditioning and then spend time in the water for the remainder of the session. The younger swimmers have dry land from 7- 7:15 p.m. and are in the water from 7:15-8:00 p.m. The older swimmers have dry land conditioning from 7:45-8:00 p.m. and then are in the pool from 8:00-9:00 p.m. Attendance to practice is not mandatory but swimmers should attend as many practices as they can. The more you practice the better you become. There are two swim meets each week held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Swim meets are either held at the Garden City Swim Club or at one of the other Division II pools.
Swim meets start at 6:30 p.m. and are usually over around 8:00 p.m. They are dual meets and consist of 30 events. Swimmers can swim in up to 3 events each meet for points. Each event is scored based on place. Individual events are scored as 5 points for 1st place, 3 points for 2nd and 1 point for third and relay events are scored 5 points for 1st and 2 points for second. The team that accumulates the most points wins the meet. Swimmers can also swim as an alternate. These swimmers do not earn points for the team but they do gain experience in swimming a race and competing with others. Swim meets are governed by the ESA rules which can be found at the ESA website.
After each home swim meet we like to give all swimmers a treat before they leave. We hand out cookies and lemonade. Each family is asked to bring one package of Hydrox/Oreo cookies to the home meet. Please pre-package 3 cookies to a ziplock bag. At the beginning of the season we also ask that each family bring in a canister of lemonade mix to be used throughout the season.
The swim team offers a concession stand at each home meet with dinner items. Most concession items are donated by swim team families. Sign up sheets for needed items are located in the breezeway the week of home meets. Please sign up to bring a few items for each home meet.
Our swim meets are run by volunteers. Each family is needed to volunteer at each meet. Please read over the following volunteer positions that need to be filled for each meet. Find the one that best suits you and sign up! Sign up sheets are located at the pool the week of the meet.
